Periodontology is that branch of dentistry that promotes the health of the individual through the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the supporting tissues of teeth and implants.

The primary objective of Periodontology is to preserve the natural dentition.

Periodontology also deals with the replacement, by means of implants, of the lost dental elements, maintaining also the peri-implant state of health over these.

Periodontal diseases are divided into gingivitis (affecting the marginal gingiva) and periodontitis (characterized by the destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth).

The diseases that affect the peri-implant tissues are divided into mucositis (reversible inflammation of peri-implanted marginal tissues without loss of bone support) and peri-implantitis (an inflammatory process that affects the peri-implant tissues causing a progressive loss of tissue support bone).

Stages of periodontal therapy are:

  Diagnosis

Non-surgical causal therapy (which includes root planing)

 Pharmacological therapy

 Implant therapy

  Periodontal support or maintenance therapy

  Surgical therapy
